Origin

Daniel Roth was born to be a horological pioneer, with both his grandfather and great-grandfather working as watchmakers in Neuchâtel, Switzerland. Following in their footsteps he started his watchmaking journey at Audemars Piguet in the Vallée de Joux, after being technically schooled in Nice. Seven years in Le Brassus, AP’s cradle, led him to double that period at Breguet where he restored the brand’s former horological majesty during the quartz crisis.   

In 1989 Daniel Roth established his own manufacture in the midst of the snowy Jura mountains. Roth was one of the first independent watchmakers who started to work under his own name, giving rise to both a business model and a strong aesthetical code. The double-ellipse case and sharply executed pinstripe guilloché dials soon became part of his signature.

His manufacture had a limited production, but its creations are known to be inventive and detailed, including a tourbillon with an 8-day power reserve, the instantaneous perpetual calendar and the Westminster Grande Sonnerie Carillon (the only automatic four-gong chiming wristwatch in production in the nineties). In 2000 Bulgari Group bought the company and the brand continued in the spirit of Daniel Roth, without him being involved as a watchmaker any longer.

The Watch

This Daniel Roth Chronograph BB 2147 is a manually-wound testimony to the watchmaker’s heritage at Breguet, being one of the earliest timepieces manufactured by Daniel Roth as an independent institute.

The double-ellipse case is made out of yellow gold and guarantees a true statement on the wrist. Having a unique shape – not conforming to either a round, rectangular or octagonal shape – it measures 38mm x 35 mm in diameter and 10mm in thickness, equally bold as comfortable to wear. The chronograph pushers follow the design of its double-ellipse case, for perfect equilibrium.

Featuring the signature pinstripe guilloché pattern, the hand-engraved, silvered dial made out of solid white gold (18kt) is visually stunning yet highly legible due to its colour contrasts and roman numerals placed on a brushed chapter ring. The hands are executed in blue steel, at 12 the dial is signed ‘DANIEL ROTH’, with ‘NUMERO X’ at 6, showcasing the watch’s distinctive number.

The Movement

This manual Daniel Roth Chronograph BB 2147 is assembled by hand and powered by the Lemania 2320 movement, an exquisitely finished caliber similar to the movement used in the Patek Philippe 5070. With 21 jewels, Geneva striping finishing, a straight-line lever escapement, a self-compensating spring and a balance adjusted to 5 positions, it dictates watchmaking at its finest.

Condition

This Daniel Roth Chronograph BB 2147 is in absolute mint condition considering its age, with only minor signs of wear on the case. It comes with its original yellow gold pin buckle, black calf leather strap and box.
