Daniel Roth Ultra Thin Medium Ellipsocurvex

  • About

Having worked for Audemars Piguet and Breguet, Daniel Roth decided to establish his own manufacture in the Vallée de Joux. The company was created in 1989 and is one of the first independent watchmakers working under his own name. He created aesthetic codes which are distinctively his own, from the double-ellipse case to the sharply executed pinstripe; guilloché dials. Daniel Roth was known for its complex and detailed watches, including a tourbillon with an 8-day power reserve, the instantaneous perpetual calendar and the Westminster Grande Sonnerie Carillon, which was the only automatic four-gong chiming wristwatch in production in the 90th. Daniel Roth was one of the key brand names of independent watchmaking in the 1990s before it was acquired by the Bulgari Group in 2000.

The yellow gold ultra thin, ref 0167 with its double ellipse case is unique in its design. Named Ellipsocurvex, it balances between round and rectangular. With a stepped bezel and straight lugs, measuring 34,5mm x 31,5mm in diameter, with a thickness of 6mm.

The dial, made of solid 18kt white gold is silvered and features a hand engraved, line motif, guilloché pattern. With a lighter, brushed chapter ring placed on top with roman numerals. The contrast in colour and finishing gives a satisfying depth to the design. The dial is signed "Daniel Roth" at 12 and the unique number XX (out of 100) is printed at 6. The lance-shaped hands are rendered in blue steel.

The manual, Daniel Roth 0167, movement is assembled by hand in the brand’s Vallée de Joux workshop, with an autonomy of 42 hours. The Ultra thin movement is measuring only 27,4 mm in diameter and only 1.73 mm thick which allows the overall design to maintain an impressively slim profile. The movement anglage are hand-finished and the Côtes de Genève are hand decorated.

The finely-finished manual-winding movement, which is engraved with the same matching number as is found on the dial and caseback features 18 jewels.

The watch is fitted with a grey, grained calf strap with creme stitches that matches the dial perfectly and comes with the original Daniel Roth, yellow gold pin buckle.

The condition of the watch is in absolute mint considering its age. Only minor signs of wear can be seen on the case.
