Patek Philippe World Time Cloisonné enamel dial 5131R

World Time watches were invented out of necessity. With the arrival of the industrial age came the means necessary to facilitate global trade and travel and, as a direct result, there was a need for timekeeping devices capable of tracking time in multiple locations.

Invented by the genius watchmaker Louis Cottier, around 1930. Cottier designed a movement featuring a local time with hour and minute hands at center, linked to a rotating 24hour ring, and bordered by an outer dial ring with the names of different cities inscribed on it. The city of choice was placed at the 12 o'clock position with the hours/minutes hand set at local time, the watch would then display the correct time in both hours and minutes, night and day, for every time zone in the world simultaneously, all the while allowing easy and accurate reading of local time, and all on a single dial.

Patek Philippe was one of the first brands to embrace the world time complication creating dials featuring beautifully crafted enamel maps of the world.

Launched in 2016, the reference 5131R is a mix of historical relevance, technical mastery and artistic craftsmanship.

The 18kt pink gold case has a domed bezel with its typical crown guard profile.

The dial has an outer, silver coloured ring with the names of different cities inscribed on it and linked to the rotation 24hour ring that also indicates the day and night indication. In the center, a graphic and colourful cloisonné enamel dial representing Asia and the Americas.

Turning the watch over, a sapphire case back reveals the mechanical self-winding movement Caliber 240 HU or "Heures Universelles" beautifully decorated by Patek Philippe standards.

The watch is in absolute mint condition and comes in its full set. Outer box, inner box, watch box, papers and tags. Including 3 straps of which one is an original, unworn Patek Philippe strap.
